Castor Oil

Scalp, skin, periods

What?

Castor oil is derived from the seeds of the Castor plant (Ricinus communis), also known as Palma Christi.

Why?

Castor oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and is high in Vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and Omega 6 and 9 beneficial fatty acids. Its unusually high ricinoleic acid ratio makes it beneficial to skin and hair. Castor oil stimulates blood circulation and heals the tissues and organs below the surface of the skin. It works to stimulate lymphatic and circulatory systems, as well as the liver.

How?

  • Scalp massage- to improve hair growth and quality. Jamaican Black castor oil is especially recommended for dry, curly hair.
  • Castor oil pack- soak a cloth in castor oil, place over the area to be healed, cover with another clean cloth and a hot water bottle. Wrap the whole area in an old towel to protect your clothing and keep the area warm.
  • Period pain/endometriosis- place a castor oil pack over your lower abdomen, depending on the severity of your period pain, use for 3-10 consecutive days, for three cycles, and then gradually reduce as pain improves. DO NOT use during menstruation, or after ovulation if you are trying to conceive.
  • Self breast exam - Whilst in the shower use the oil to firmly massage both breasts, up into your armpit. Become familiar with what is normal for your breasts. Best done on the same day each month, day 7 of your cycle is recommended. If you are nursing the oil could be toxic to your baby so wash thoroughly with soap before feeding.
